CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY COURSES:
 
Medical Terminology - 56 hours

Recognition of medical terms including prefix, suffix, and root words; includes a general overview of systems of the body.

Anatomy & Pysiology - 292 hours

Anatomy is the study of structures of the human body and the relationship of its parts to each other. Physiology is the study of the functions of the various parts and organs of the body. These are taught together as an integrated course with appropriate Pathology also covered in each section.
 
    A/P I:  Focus is on basic structures and functions of the body - cellular, tissue, and skeletal systems.
    A/P II:  Focus is on the muscular system.
    A/P III:  Focus is on the structural location, functions and actions of muscles.
    A/P IV:  Focus is on the nervous system.
    A/P V:  Focus is on the structural location and fucntions of the endocrine, cardiovascular and lymphatic body systems.
    A/P VI:  Focus is on the respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive systems.
    A/P VII:  Comprehensive review for finals and state board exam.
 
 
MASSAGE THERAPY COURSES:

Massage Theory & Practical with Pathology - 236 hours

The treatment of disorders of the human body by the systematic external application of massage techniques including touch, stroking, friction, vibration, percussion, kneading, stretching, compression, and passive joint movements within the normal physiologic range of motion.  The physiological effects and therapeutic application of massage procedures (Theory) and appropriate Pathology is taught along with the hands-on application of the various procedures (Practical).  Also incorporates additional Hygiene and Ethics, as appropriate in each section.

    MT/P I & II:  Focus is on how and why massage is beneficial for the body and learning the basic techniques.
            Developing a sense of touch; how to sheet clients for modesty and comfort; and practice of skills that
            apply to general massage standands set down by the Academy and State Medical Board.
    MT/P III & IV:  Focus is on the therapeutic and physiological effects of massage with emphasis on Pathology
            and the application of techniques on special regions of the body.
    MT/P V & VI:  Focus is on case studies and how all the various aspects of massage training fit together to meet
            the need of your client.
    MT/P VII:  Comprehensive review and preparation for exit massage, finals and state board exam.

Student Massage Clinic- 52 hours

Students will work on the public in a clinic setting similar to how they would in their own practice. Focus will be on taking client histories, preparing the client for the massage, incorporating the information and techniques you've learned into real-life practice. 
 
Reflexology - 8 hours

A science based on the principle that the feet contain reflex areas that correspond to all of the glands, organs, and parts of the body.

Hydrotherapy - 4 hours

The application of water (hot/cold/ice/) to the body for therapeutic purposes.

Body Mechanics - 4 hours

Proper posture and body alignment for performing massage procedures.

Chair Massage - 4 hours
 
Learn how to translate your massage training into a chair massage routine.
 
Hygiene - 4 hours + 

Focus will be the establishment and maintenance of health practices necessary to good health welfare, including CDC guidelines and HIV precautions.

Stretching - 4 hours
 
Use of stretching techniques as part of a client treatment protocol.
 
Client Assessment / Documentation - 16 hours
 
Taking verbal histories and conducting physical assessments and knowing when to refer clients to other health care profesionals.
 
Joint Kinesiology & Range of Motion - 4 hours
 
 
BUSINESS & OTHER COURSES:
 
Business I / Business II & Taxes - 16 hours
 
Focus is on how to run a small massage therapy business.
    BUS I:  Start-up costs, advertising, supplies, etc.
    BUS II:  Business & financial record keeping, referring clients, and Taxes
 
Massage Therapy Laws & Rules - 6 hours
 
Scope of Practice for Massage Therapists; Ohio massage therapy laws; HIPPA

SOAP Charting / Documentation - 4 hours

Client record keeping; charting client progress.

Ethics- 16 hours +

Focus will be on the system or set of principles of moral values and conduct that govern the professional Massage Therapist, including when and how to refer clients out to other health care providers. Additional Ethics is covered during Massage theory/Practical coursework.
 
Physical Conditioning - 16 hours
 
Massage therapy is a very physical occupation. Learn how to condition and care for your own body - so that you have the fitness and stamina to be able to care for others.
 
Interpersonal Skills - 6 hours
 
Professionalism with clients and other health care providers, as well as "tableside manner."

CPR- 4 hours

Certification in basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation.
